Designing spaces to be experienced with the soul even before the body. That's what he does. Antonio Burgo, an architect by training and vocation, who has made design his primary language: a way to read the world, to narrate it, to protect it. His story, his thoughts, and his aesthetics are at the center of the new episode of the documentary series produced by Rockisland Studio and conceived by Appress Agency, an integral part of the multimedia editorial project of Suruq Magazine.
Founder of the studio 18LAB In 2009, Burgo transformed his passion for drawing and art—passed down from his painter grandfather—into a professional path that combines rigor and sensitivity, technique and poetry. For him, every project is an exercise in listening: to places, people, and the stories embedded within the folds of walls, within the shadows of volumes.
His architecture draws on historical layers and engages with the materiality of time. His academic training has given him the tools to make visible the sensitivity that already inhabited his gaze. Today, his design language respects the past without replicating it, grafting it onto a contemporary vision where aesthetics, sustainability, and innovation interact in balance.
But it is in the home—the most intimate, most fragile space, most exposed to human emotion—that Burgo finds the deepest challenge. For him, the home is a lair, a refuge that is never neutral: every object, every surface, every void carries with it a fragment of personal or family memory. Designing a home, for Burgo, means touching the invisible boundary between form and identity.
His work is intertwined with that of the laboratory he founded and leads: 18LAB, a multidisciplinary studio where architecture engages with art, technology, and sustainability. A space where people experiment, design, and imagine the future of places without losing sight of the present.
With this new episode, Suruq continues its evolution: from a magazine to an editorial project to be viewed, listened to, and experienced. A visual journey through the creative excellence of eastern Sicily and the Aeolian Islands, where each time a different story takes shape, made of vision, hands, matter, and spirit.
